Meeting of the Coordination Center’s Internet Governance Committee

On November 24, the Internet Governance Committee of the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ held a regular meeting. It focused on the results of a series of the fall events on internet governance and plans for 2017.

The participants also discussed the ICANN strategy for Eastern Europe, CIS and Central Asia, which was presented for the first time at the ICANN57 meeting in Hyderabad. According to ICANN Vice President Michael Yakushev, this was one of the most ambitious meetings in the corporation’s history.

One of the main tasks of the regional strategy, he explained, is to get more representatives of countries of our region involved in internet governance: “We are trying to involve the widest possible range of representatives of different communities so that the interests of all sides are respected.” The regional strategy discussion was held in Russian for the first time.

Leonid Todorov, General Manager of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Name Association, presented the results of the 3rd World Internet Conference, which concluded on November 18 in Wuzhen, China. “The conference showed that China is actively creating its own internet governance agenda and aims to become at least the regional leader,” Todorov said.

During the meeting, the participants also voted to admit a new member to the Committee – Anatoly Streltsov, senior researcher at the Institute for Information Security Issues of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

At the end of the meeting, it was proposed to make the next meeting offsite and hold it at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Diplomatic Academy, with the participation of student science organizations and the general public.
