On August 17th a contest “Learn the Internet – Manage it” took place in the Center of Independent Diagnostics of the Moscow Center of Education’s Quality. It was organized by the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ with support from PAO “Rostelecom” (PJSC), Regional Public Organization "Center for Internet Technologies" and a hot-line for children “Nedopusti!”. Pupils of 7-8th grade of Moscow schools tried their hands in the contest.
During the competition participants got acquainted with the basics of the Internet and also learned the most important rules of personal safety online. Pupils found out what are domains, hosting and IP address, how email and social networks function and how to use popular Internet services most effectively. Apart from that they also learned how to avoid becoming victim of scammers, what types of dangerous content could be encountered online and what to do to avoid a breach of personal data.
AndreiVorobyev, director at Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ, shared his impressions: “All of the tasks and assignments were given to pupils in a form of a game understandable for them – quests, puzzles and interactive quizzes. This approach has proven itself effective many times. Thousands of teenagers, thanks to out project, gained basic knowledge about the Internet and increased their level of digital literacy.”
“Today pupils of 7-8th grades were doing “not traditional” exercises from the standard educational section, but real tasks of the similar level of complexity to the tasks used during online contest “Learn the Internet – Manage it!”. At first, many words and concepts seemed unfamiliar but with each new task pupils got new knowledge and experience. As a result, all pupils did perfectly well and got enthusiastic during the process”, says Denis Zhilin, the head of social and educational projects at the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ. “We hope that children will continue to learn about possibilities of the Internet, IT services and rules of safe conduct online, for example, using apps for mobile devices. They will have a chance to demonstrate their knowledge very soon – on October 1st starts V All-Russian online-competition. After that in November a school IT marathon will take place with support from the Department of Education of the city of Moscow. During this event pupils from Moscow will compete using their knowledge not only on how the Internet functions and what possibilities it provides. They will show their applied skills, for example, assembling computers or setting LAN.”
As a result of the competition, each pupil got a certificate of participation, souvenirs from the organizers, manual “Internet from A to Ya” and a brochure “Internet Safety Rules”.
