Today, the 56th ICANN meeting opened in Helsinki, Finland. It could become a historic event, as the next ICANN meeting will take place in November, while the contract between IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) and the US Department of Commerce will expire in late September. If the proposals to transfer control of the domain system to the Internet community are adopted, this meeting will be the last under the present model of Internet governance.
ICANN Senior Vice President David Olive opened the meeting, and then ICANN’s new president, Goran Marby, welcomed participants. For him, the meeting in Helsinki is the first in his new position. During the opening ceremony, ICANN presented Multistakeholder Ethos awards to Keith Davidson (Internet Society) and Chuck Gomes (Verisign).
The Helsinki agenda meeting includes discussions of key issues of domain system development and Internet governance. In particular, the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) and Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) will hold several meetings today. The forum will run through June 30. A representative delegation from the Coordination Center for TLD .RU is attending the event.
