On April 7, the Russian national domain .RU will celebrate its 22nd anniversary. Over the past five years, it has grown 1.6 times or by 1.9 million domain names. As of April 7, 2015, .RU includes over 5 million domain names (5,178,910) managed by 1.9 million administrators, and 94.7 percent of domain names in .RU are delegated. To date, there are 35 accredited domain registrars in .RU.
The domain passed a milestone of 5 million domain names in November 2015. .RU is one of the world’s largest national domains and ranks fifth among all ccTLDs (excluding .TK) and fourth among European domains by the number of domain names. .RU is also the ninth largest TLD in the world.
The beginning of 2016 also proved successful for .RU. In the first three months, .RU saw a net increase of 125,746 domain names, registering 497,262 new domain names. To compare, the same period in 2015 brought in 33,568 domain names, with 394,412 domain names registered in .RU. Thus, 2016’s figures show growth nearly four times greater than at the start of last year.
