Children's websites contest to include Personal Data category

The 6th International Personal Data Protection Conference has taken place in Moscow. Organized by the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor), it is an annual forum for the safety of confidential information in today’s world. Speakers included representatives of the legislative and executive branches of government, members of industry-specific associations, data processing operators, developers and producers of personal data protection systems, telecoms company executives and relevant organizations.

Opening the conference, Roskomnadzor head Alexander Zharov said that in March 2016, the service will submit for public discussion a draft public information awareness strategy in the sphere of personal data protection. He pointed out that the agency has already started a campaign to enhance public awareness about personal data protection.

“The first public step has already been made. It includes a community advertising video, the website персональныеданные.дети and a commentary on personal data processing law for specialists. All of this is designed to ensure that the broadest possible sections of society – from children to primary school students to adults – can make a conscious decision regarding the dissemination of personal data,” he said.

Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ, spoke about the work with the younger generation regarding personal data protection, and offered a detailed account of the support that the center provides to Positive Content, a national contest of websites for children, teenagers and young people. It annually selects the best websites for children and teens and helps promote them on the Runet. The contest focuses considerable attention on the safe use of Internet technology, which is why the seventh contest, which will start in February 2016, will include a new category, Personal Data, which was supported by Roskomnadzor. In addition, a special module dedicated to personal data protection methods will appear next year in an online game, entitled Study and Control the Internet!, which the center has been running for four years in collaboration with Rostelecom.

Denis Zhilin, marketing director of the Smart Internet Foundation (.ДЕТИ), followed up on the issue of the safe Internet use for children. He described the safety features of children’s content in the .ДЕТИ domain. The domain registrar voluntarily assumed the obligation of monitoring the entire domain zone for undesirable content, which it does free of charge both for website owners and for end users.

“Incident reports reveal minor infractions. They are dealt with promptly and effectively, and we have never had to resort to blocking websites during the domain’s entire operation,” he said.
