Security threats to the DNS root infrastructure were discussed at Cyber Security Forum-2015

Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ participated in Cyber Security Forum-2015, that took place in the multimedia center of Russia Today agency. During the panel discussion «Safety of the Runet root infrastructure» guests discussed which threats do critically important systems of the Russian segment of the Internet face.

Pavel Khramtsov, the head of the Netoscope poject, Alexander Ilyin, CTO at MSK-IX, Alexander Venedyuhin, analyst at RU-CENTER, Maxim Burtikov and Anton Baskov from RIPE NCC and Alexei Semenyaka from Qrator participated in the session. The session was moderated by Mikhail Anisimov from CC and Karen Kazaryan, chief analyst at Russian Association for Electronic Communications.

The discussion participants talked about security of the DNS root infrastructure, system of IP-routing, TLS infrastructure and tried to simulate the threats that Russian resources might face and readiness to tackle these threats. According to the participants, the major part of difficulties with the critically important infrastructure is caused by configuration errors, not transparent enough arrangements and inconsistencies in the policy of network management. The percentage of malicious activities is very low and attacks on the critically important systems are rarely the reason for their failure.

The head of the Netoscope project Pavel Khramtsov commented on the possible threats to the DNS root infrastructure: «The main danger lies not in the fact that some users may lose access to the DNS root servers but that different operators will have their own inconsistent copies of the zone file. This could lead to the situation when different countries or regions might have their own Internet, not similar to what others see.»
