This week 9th International Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is taking place in Istanbul. The forum will last four days, from 2 to 5 of September. Around two thousand and a half representatives of governments, private sector and civil society from many countries of the world take part. Representatives of the Coordination Center for TLD RU and Technical Center of Internet are among the delegates.
Participants of the Forum discuss security issues and Internet accessibility, as well as issues related to its openness and possibilities of free expression of opinion on the World Wide Web. The forum will host more than 150 sessions, working groups, meetings and other events.
On the second day of the forum there was a roundtable discussion dedicated to linguistic diversity of the Internet and IDN domains. Participants of the roundtable discussed the necessity of making the Internet a truly multilingual environment. They came to the conclusion that linguistic diversity that is provided by IDN domains ensures stability of the Internet and its intensive development.
Deputy Director at Coordination Center Irina Danelia attracted participants’ attention to the necessity of support of IDN domains in all Internet applications and also early completion of full-fledged email. She highlighted that the absence of email hinders the development not only of Russian domain .РФ, but also other non-Latin domains. “A new world of IDN gives all of us a unique possibility to choose outstanding, memorable domain names, that our compatriots understand. IDN domains should be actively promoted on the government level as well. If government supports the initiative to establish a national IDN-domain, than the domain becomes popular among citizens of the country. A good example – our .РФ domain”, Irina Danelia said.
