Number of IPv6-connected users doubles every year

The number of users connected to Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) has grown considerably since the World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012. According to experts, public interest in this internet protocol has far from flagged, but has been doubling every year.

Given this rapid growth, IPv6 could become the most widely used protocol in four or five years. Many large web companies and Internet service providers offer their clients IPv6 as a standard solution. According to ISOC, over 250 network operators offer access to internet traffic via IPv6, and their number keeps growing daily.

Transitioning to IPv6 became a necessity after the pool of free IPv4 addresses was exhausted. Participants of the World IPv6 Launch had been cooperating since the first World IPv6 Day was held in 2011. On that day, hundreds of websites, Internet providers and portals joined forces to ensure a successful trial of IPv6. On the World IPv6 Launch day a year later, they enabled IPv6 for thousands of their clients. The latest results prove conclusively that IPv6 will continue to spread around the world.

The Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ (CC for TLD RU/РФ), which was one of the companies that initiated the first Russia IPv6 Day, congratulates all Russian users on this wonderful achievement and hopes that this modern technology will continue to improve. “The importance of IPv6 for Internet development cannot be overstated,” said Andrei Kolesnikov, Director of CC for TLD RU/РФ. “For example, the trend known as the Internet of Things (IoT), which has been growing on a daily basis, would have been impossible without IPv6, along with many other projects. This is why we are promoting the continued development of IPv6 among operators, companies and ordinary users. The growing number of IPv6-connected users is evidence of a strong and growing demand for this protocol.”
