On the night of February 26 to 27, a new entry in Cyrillic – . ДЕТИ (Russian for "children") – appeared in the root server registries of global domain addresses. Thus, .ДЕТИ has become the first among top-level Russian domains to be delegated. These domains are created as part of the New gTLD program. This is an important step towards creating a children's web space.
Technically .ДЕТИ is a combination of “xn--d1acj3b” symbols. This domain address is recognized by major browsers. The domain will be administrated by the Smart Internet Foundation.
In April 2012, the Reasonable Internet Foundation applied for a children's domain in Cyrillic to ICANN with the support of the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media, the Coordinating Center for TLD RU/RF, the Agency for Strategic Initiatives and several NGOs. “The fact that the .ДЕТИ domain has been delegated technically means that it has been registered with root servers, which we received notice of from ICANN,” Chair of the Board of the Smart Internet Foundation Marina Nikerova said. “In reality, this means that the domain exists and it is alive. This is the most important thing. We did it.”
The first service domain is already operative. In April 2014, .ДЕТИ will open priority registration of second-level domain names for exclusive holders of rights to trademarks and service marks, the holders of exclusive rights to brand names, the holders of exclusive rights to use the appellation of origin, non-profit organizations and the media. Following the priority period, anyone will be able to register their domain names with .ДЕТИ.
“We’ve been looking forward to this day,” Director of the Smart Internet Foundation Vladimir Mamontov said. "Anyone should have access to and benefit from the Internet. The point of creating the .ДЕТИ domain zone is to build a different world that the children will enjoy, rather than opening them up to the risk of browsing dangerous content. Delegating the children’s domain is the result of serious and hard work by ICANN professionals, the Smart Internet Foundation and the entire Internet community, that has been conducted since 2012.”
