Russian Internet Week has opened in Moscow, Russia, today. The annual event traditionally gathers Internet experts and leading businesses, communication specialists, government representatives and users.
The Coordination Center continues to support RIW, believing the event is a major place to exchange opinions and achieve progress in the most critical spheres of Internet development in Russia. This year, the Coordination Center has partnered with RIW to support the business zone of the event.
Andrei Kolesnikov, the Coordination Center director, exposed new details about .ДЕТИ, the IDN ccTLD for younger audiences. The TLD, according to Kolesnikov, is to go live by the end of 2013. "This is a completely new approach to the Internet for younger audiences. We strive to create an island where children could easily use the global network and learn more about it", Kolesnikov says. He also added that one of the Coordination Center's top priorities is maintaining secure ccTLDs, and Netoscope, the project aimed at collecting and processing data about malicious resources in the Russian Internet, is a major part of these activities.
RIW 2013 continued with a session themed "Russian Internet today: economy and audience", uniting leading Russian and global Internet experts as well as government representatives. Alexey Volin, Deputy Minister of Communications of the Russian Federation, said that the Internet is a massive phenomenon now, meaning stakeholders have to use conservative approach. He also spoke on the anti-piracy law passed by the Russian government recently: "This law requires mandatory cooperation from all Internet industry players, and it would be excellent for this mandatory cooperation to work". Marina Nikerova, deputy director of the Technical Center of Internet, also spoke on the TCI's infrastructure and its expansion. "If we don't discuss the infrastructure and pay no attention to it, it means that it's working seamlessly", Nikerova says. She also noted that Russian domains (.RU and .РФ) will soon pass the 6,000,000 domain names mark – and new gTLDs are to greatly enhance the Russian Internet in the nearest future.
Runet Media Holding's information projects director Dmitry Chistov, FOM-RUNET project leader in FOM (Public Opinion Foundation) Svetlana Borisova, and Dmitry Olshansky, Imena.UA CEO, also took part in the session.
