ICANN has approved the delegation of .УКР ("ukr", short for Ukraine) Cyrillic IDN to Ukraine's UNIC (Ukrainian Network Information Centre). UNIC has filed its application for Ukraine's Cyrillic IDN in autumn 2009.
UNIC comments that the registrations may start as early as summer 2013. According to the registry's plans, the priority will be given to government agencies and corporate trademark owners, and registrations could be made in both Ukrainian and Russian. Juri Goncharuk, UNIC CEO, believes that the new TLD could see up to 200,000 registrations.
"New Cyrillic IDNs is excellent news indeed: more Cyrillic IDNs appearing on the Internet is an excellent trend. We congratulate our Ukrainian colleagues on this remarkable event and, as a registry of .РФ, hope that .РФ's positive experience will help in successful launch and further development of .УКР", says Andrei Kolesnikov, the director of the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ.
