HostObzor 20, a leading industry forum for hosting providers and domainers, has opened in St.-Petersburg, Russia. This autumn's biannual event celebrates the forum's anniversary.
The event covers a number of topics relevant to the hosting businesses, registrars and other Internet stakeholders. At the Hosting providers and Registrars Commission roundtable, the attendees discussed changes to national legal practices as well as new trends, such as cloud services, and technology aspects of the hosting and domaining business.
Sergey Kopylov, chief legal officer of the Technical Center of Internet, explained the UDRP procedure and its prospects in Russia. Kopylov notes that the UDRP is not intended to eliminate legal proceedings; while the procedure is an alternative to solving the case in court, any party reserves the right to demand legal proceedings. In Russia, UDRP is expected to be rolled out in 2015.
Marina Nikerova (TCI) spoke on domaining aspects, the best practices adopted worldwide as well as on drop-catching. Drop-catching is a practice receiving mixed reviews, Nikerova says. "It all sounds fine in theory, while in reality users that are unable to register an expiring domain by themselves have to resort to domainers. There are two opinions: some think that the practice helps keep the domain pool fresh, while others are strongly opposed to it".
According to SIDN, 19% of expiring domains are re-registered by domainers. Marina Nikerova also noted that one of the most expensive "secondary market" domains are in Russia's .RU. "There's no single solution that would fit all; drop-catching is one of the most challenging topics that traditionally raises a lot of discussions", Nikerova says.
The forum attendees also discussed terms of registering domain names in Russia. Olga Alexandrova-Myasina, chief marketing officer at the Coordination Center, stresses the importance of supporting the HostObzor conferences. "Supporting these events is a tradition for the Coordination Center as the conference helps initiating comprehensive discussins, both at official sessions and during evening talks," Alexandrova-Myasina notes. "We are proud to announce that we will further support HostObzor in the future as the conference's general partner".
This Saturday, the Coordination Center also hosted a meeting for registrars and hosting providers; the attendees were able to discuss the most topical challenges of today's domaining, as well as participate in Q&A session with the Coordination Center.
