Andrei Kolesnikov: "Aggregating information about malware brings enormous benefits"

A press conference themed "ENOG 4 as an example of uniting professional efforts to make Internet safe and secure" was held by the Coordination Center on October 25, 2012. Among other themes, the joint effort to tackle cybercrime in Russian domains by the Coordination Center and Kaspersky Lab was widely discussed as well.

Andrei Kolesnikov, Ilya Sachkov (Group-IB), Andrey Yarnikh (Kaspersky Lab), Sergey Golovanov (Kaspersky Lab), and Andrey Bondarenko (HighLoad Lab) took part in the event.

Andrei Kolesnikov noted at the opening of the press conference that ENOG events are very important for Russia, with ENOG being an excellent example of collaboration between technology professionals that leads to ensuring network resiliency, stability and safety.

Kolesnikov stressed that partnering with Kaspersky Lab brings Russian companies one step closer to the alliance where all members will be able to fight cyberthreats. "We've created an analytical platform that enables the professionals of the Coordination Center, the Technical Center of Internet, Group-IB, RU-CERT, Yandex, Mail.Ru and Kaspersky Lab to collaborate, exchange analytical data and examine where the malware comes from. As a result, we can see quite clearly into what is really happening in the Internet in relation to the cyberthreats," Andrei Kolesnikov says. The director of the Coordination Center notes that there's also a social aspect to the threats: "Russian registrars suspend hundreds of domain names every month, which means that the viruses and DDoS attacks are only tools. It is much more important to see into why this is happening, predicting and preventing it if possible".

Ilya Sachkov thinks that Russia now boasts a full set of measures to fight cyberthreats in the national domains, with the Coordination Center playing a critical part in it: "Thanks to our efforts, the criminals are compelled to move their activities to other domain zones, making Russian domains cleaner and safer". The fact that Russian domains are now much safer than they were sometime ago is also stressed by many international experts.

Andrey Bondarenko pointed out that SMB businesses are not protected from DDoS attacks that more often than not exist as a tool to eliminate unwanted competition. DDoS attacks, according to Bondarenko, are "a vandalistic weapon" that harms both the company it's aimed at and the entire network. With all this in mind, it's quite hard to prove that the company has suffered losses due to a DDoS attack. This is why it's critical to unite efforts in making the criminals liable for damage they've caused.

Sergey Golovanov has shown how user carelessness may lead to serious problems, leading the users to becoming victims of the criminals. Sometimes users spread viruses without even knowing it, and 80% of the threats are Internet-related, with computers becoming infected by means of browsing, using e-mail or visiting malicious websites.

The analytical platform based on the CC and TCI capabilities that enables aggregating partner information on cyberthreats brings its benefits already, as the members exchange information on malware in an instant and help minimize the threats in the Russian domains. "Malicious activity is a multimillion industry, and its growth is directly related to that of the Internet, as the criminals move from offline activities to online. We need to pay full attention to tackling cybercrime, both with the measures imposed by the Internet community and by passing cybercrime-related legal acts".
