Mail.Ru has enabled Cyrillic e-mail addresses in .РФ, Russia's Cyrillic IDN. With Cyrillic addresses supported, Mail.Ru users are now able to send and receive e-mails to/from .РФ users, add Cyrillic addresses to the address book and find them using search.
.РФ is Russia's national top-level domain, now boasting more than 800,000 domain names. The largest IDN domain in the world now also rates 16th among Europe's country-code domains as well.
"Including national alphabets support in e-mail addressing is a very important step in further development of Russia's national domain," Andrei Kolesnikov, the director of the Coordination Center, says. "We're glad that millions of Mail.Ru users are now able to use addresses in .РФ, and this is a major breakthrough for our IDN".
IETF's work to enable e-mails in IDN domains is currently underway. At the moment, the corresponding protocol is being tested, with major Chinese services planning to enable its support next summer.
