On June 6 “Russian IPv6 Day” took place in St. Petersburg. The event coincided with World IPv6 launch and was organized by Moscow Internet Exchange (MSK-IX) and the Technical Center of Internet (TCI) with the support of Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and the Ministry of Communications and Mass Media of the RF.
The Conference was opened by the Director of Moscow Internet Exchange (MSK-IX) Elena Voronina and the Director of Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ Andrey Kolesnikov. They welcomed the participants and told about their idea of the IPv6 future in Russia. Andrey Kolesnikov emphasized that the transfer over IPv6 was a natural process for the Internet. In his opinion the transfer will be fully completed in 20 years. However, “the need of a shift in the mind of all participants of the Internet Market is already felt today.’ noticed Elena Voronina.
The CEO of the cluster of information technologies of the innovation Center “Skolkovo” Alexander Turkot appreciated the great role of the Internet Community and non-governmental organizations in the IPv6 implementation. “IPv6 is a medicine for many years ahead. But it is not quite clear today how to transfer over a new protocol smoothly: not all technical specialists understand that this work should be done already now. We must not wait for a “zero hour”. The task of the Center “Skolkovo” is to support this undertaking. Think of any project which will enable a fast transfer over IPv6 and we will support it in terms of money as well”.
ISOC program Director Andrey Robachevsky told about the World Launch of IPv6: “The motto of the today’s event is “This time it is real! It is becoming normal for the Internet, and advanced users have switched to it already”. He reminded the participants how The World launch day of IPv6 was held in 2011. “Today IPv6 is becoming part of the services package and it must be accessible for all Internet users”, - emphasized Mr. Robachevsky.
Chief Engineer of “Best-Telecom” Company Valery Soldatov gave a detailed review of the implementation of IPv6 in the world and in Europe on the governmental level. The statistics given by Valery showed that China has become the implementation leader nowadays. As for Russia, Mr. Soldatov said: “Governmental resources, namely, a popular portal gosusligi.ru certainly must be available in the modern protocol IPv6, the future lies with it”.
The importance of the transfer over IPv6 protocol was emphasized by other speakers. Technical Director of MSK-IX Alexander Ilyin shared his experience of IPv6 implementation on Moscow and St. Petersburg Traffic Exchange Points. Technical Director of Pin-Telecom Company Kirill Malevanov and an independent expert Aleksey Semenyaka told about technical peculiarities of using IPv6 for telecommunications providers and the problems the providers may face. The representatives of major russian internet companies Yandex and Mail.ru explained in detail the whole process of implementation of IPv6 on the companies’ networks. These companies took part in last year’s World Launch Day of IPv6.
The Conference was closed with and interesting report “Introduction to VXLAN technology” made by Frank Laforsh system engineer for Arista. He told about the implementation of IPv6 in his company and answered questions.
