DENIC, the managing organization of Germany’s top-level domain .DE, and the Technical Center of Internet, the backbone services provider for .RU, .SU and .РФ, have successfully expanded their DNS networks, with two new DNS nodes opened in Moscow, Russia, and Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany.
As a result of the joint project, a new DNS node in .RU, .SU and .РФ DNS network went live, with a total of 15 DNS nodes in the Russian backbone system as of now. Located at the German registry’s technical site, the new node is connected to the Internet via DENIC’s backbone. Further, the new DNS node is connected to the DE-CIX traffic exchange point. At the moment, 24% of requests served by the new node, come from Russia, followed by German (18%), Ukrainian (10%), Israeli, Romanian and Byelorussian users. The new node is available both via IPv4 and IPv6 protocols.
In addition to the new German DNS node serving Russian top-level domains, another DNS node for Germany’s .DE went live in Russia. The new node is located at TCI’s technical site in Moscow, and is connected to the MSK-IX traffic exchange point. The Technical Center of Internet ensures connectivity of the German node. The new node also supports both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols. It currently handles up to 3.5 Mbps of traffic, corresponding to 40 to 50K queries per minute. Thanks to TCI and DENIC’s joint project, requests to .DE and Russian ccTLDs can be processed even faster now. This project enables DENIC and TCI to expand their DNS networks, and will ensure continuous reliability and stability of the global network.
“We are glad to cooperate with DENIC, the world’s largest ccTLD registry. Its experience and skill allow running high-quality service for DNS infrastructure, while TCI strives to ensure ultimate reliability as well as high availability of resources”, says Elena Voronina, CFO of Technical Center of Internet CJSC. “Today, the Internet penetration increases constantly, with numbers of Internet users increasing as well. This, in turn, signifies the need to expand national domain infrastructures continuously, and this is the task of major importance, both for the TCI and for national registries”.
“New DNS node serving Russia’s national domains in Frankfurt-am-Main is crucial to increase quality and stability of key Internet infrastructure,” — says Andrei Kolesnikov, the Coordination Center’s CEO. “We’ve selected the site in Germany due to increasing numbers of queries to Russian domains, and it was an easy choice thanks to DENIC’s reputation as a secure operator of the largest country code top level domain. Within this project, the Technical Center of Internet is to create another storage for critical registry data based on the node in Frankfurt. Therefore, domain name owners can be ensured that the Internet address infrastructure stays safe and secure».
«DENIC appreciates the opportunity to enlarge its name service footprint by leveraging the mutual cooperation with .RU", says Dr. Jörg Schweiger, CTO of DENIC.
Today, the DNS network serving .RU, .SU and .РФ country-code top-level domains, consists of 15 nodes located in 8 Russian cities as well as in Europe, America and Asia. Thanks to IP-anycast, user requests are directed to the nearest DNS node via the shortest route. This, in turn, allows ensuring the fastest response possible and interchangeability of DNS nodes while making DNS service more resistant to network attacks and failures. MSK-IX specialists are maintaining and monitoring network 24/7.
DENIC is responsible for managing .DE, Germany’s top-level Internet domain and the world’s second largest Internet registry with 15,000,000+ domain names. Next to running a 17-site worldwide name server network, DENIC provides all domain database and registration system resources for .de and also operates the German ENUM domain (.9.4.e164.arpa), along with all .DE and ENUM related whois lookup services. Since its inception in 1996, as a private, not-for-profit cooperative, DENIC’s mission is to fulfil a public purpose by supporting a fast, secure and reliable access to German Internet pages and e-mail addresses, through the excellence of its extensive name server infrastructure and services, on a 24/7 basis. Today, 280+ registrars from the IT and telecommunications industry in Germany and abroad offer .DE registration services and support the independent, self-regulatory approach of the cooperative as active members. DENIC is also committed to be a leading force in shaping the continued development of the open, decentralized and secure Internet, in a close collaborative effort with international Internet bodies including ICANN, RIPE, IETF, and CENTR. Based in Frankfurt-am- Main, Germany, DENIC employs 120 staff and has an annual turnover of EUR15m.
