On 12 July 2011, an official expedition on a small aircraft set off from an airfield near Moscow bound to Russia’s East coast. The expedition is timed to the 75th anniversary of Valery Chkalov’s flight to the Far East. The Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ, the Technical Center of Internet, and the Moscow Internet Exchange (MSK-IX) have provided sponsorship and information support for the project. Alexander Scherbakov, the TCI’s expert and head of the technical projects, has decided to join the expedition and take a flight on a deltaplane together with a professional pilot.
A deltaplane decorated with the logos of the Coordination Center and the TCI will proceed on the route from Moscow to the island of Chkalov. The route length is 9,000-plus km. The route passes over more than 30 Russian cities, including Achinsk, Irkutsk, Ishim, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Kurgan, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Ryazan, Tambov, Ulan-Ude, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, among others. Worldwide, deltaplane expeditions have long become popular. As Russia has for long been keeping its air space closed, this flight will be a groundbreaking one.
For the Coordination Center of national domains .RU/.РФ participation in this flight will be yet another step on the way to promotion of national domain space across Russian regions. The main objective of these events is to expand the use of national domains of the Russian Federation (.RU and .РФ) for the benefit of the Russian Internet community. The inauguration event, the workshop “Russia’s Domain Space and the New Opportunities for Your Business” has been recently held in the city of Irkutsk, and the CC plans to keep conducting educational and promotional activities in Russian regions further on.
The scheduled timeline of the expedition is one month. The pilots are equipped with trackers to determine their position and transmit information to a satellite. Anyone can monitor their navigation on the official website of the flight. This expedition will demonstrate the ability to perform long-distance flights on deltaplanes in Russia without ground tracking. As an off-side event, a memorial plaque will be renovated at the Valery Chkalov’s landing place on the island of Udd.
