Three new National domains received green light from the ICANN

On 21 April 2011, the ICANN Board of Directors took a decision to delegate three new top-level internationalized domains:. Serbia (.срб), Morocco (.المغرب, “al-Maghreb”) and Algeria (.الجزائر, “al-Jazairi”)- which use script different from the Latin one.

Domain delegation implies the transfer of control over a part of the domain space to a designated operator. In this case, the domains in question were delegated to the Serbian organization RNIDS, Moroccan agency ANRT, and Algerian registry CERIST.

However, delegation does not mean the start of operating the domain: several months may pass between the delegation and the launch of open registration therein. For example, IDN TLD .РФ was delegated to the Coordination Center on 12 May 2010 and the open registration was launched six months later, on 11 November 2010. Prior to the open registration, each domain, as a rule, passes through the stage of priority reservation of domain names. Thus, priority registration terms and conditions differ from domain to domain. For example, during the preliminary registration of domain names in the “second Cyrillic” domain, .срб, the right to a proper domain name will be given solely to users who already own a domain name in ccTLD .RS.

As of today, there are 30 IDNs that have passed the approval procedure. Out of them 20 IDNs were delegated and for the remaining 10 one the delegation is pending.. China, Iran, India, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunis, Thailand and UAE have their own functioning IDN TLDs, which use script different from the Latin one.
Palestine and Taiwan, disputed territories, likewise have their IDN TLDs.
