On 25 June, ICANN International Meeting held in Brussels announced delegation of several new IDNs. Today China (.中国 – Simplified Chinese, 中國 – conventional Chinese), Hong-Kong (.香港) and Taiwan (.台灣) have been delegated hieroglyph top-level domains.
China has been delegated two IDNs at once, as there coexist two hieroglyphic scripts in China: traditional and simplified. The Chinese national registry CNNIC has to ensure name synchronization in two root domains at once by applying administrative methods. It is anticipated that Internet standards experts will study versions of technical solution of domains synchronization problems and will come up with solutions of this issue.
Hieroglyph domains formed part of the third batch of top-level domains in primary languages delegated by ICANN. Prior to it Egypt, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates were delegated their IDNs. Then, on 12 May 20120, Russia was delegated Cyrillic IDN – ccTLD .РФ.
