Moscow, Russia: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and the Coordination Center for TLD RU (the manager of the .RU Internet country code top level domain) have been working over the past year to make sure Russian Internet users are aware of and a part of Internet development.
"Our aim is to assure that the Russian Internet community is a part of the global processes defining how the Internet develops," said Veni Markovski, ICANN’s Manager of Regional Relations for Russia and the CIS region. "Our work with the Coordination Center for TLD RU is living proof of the success of the bottom-up, consensus driven model ICANN uses to develop policies. The Coordination Center has been a valuable participant in different levels of the ICANN work".
Over the coming months, ICANN and the Coordination Center for TLD RU are going to focus their efforts in the following areas:
"The main goal is to help Russian users to become aware of how the Internet is designed and support their participation in various events where they will be able to hear the Internet key players from around the world," said Andrey Romanov, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD RU. "Our country has an enormous number of well-qualified experts in many areas who can contribute to the work of the ICANN community as well. We also expect that world leading experts will share their experience and knowledge by attending the forums, meetings, and seminars which are holding here in Russia."
ICANN and the Coordination Center for TLD RU started working together long time before March 2007 when the two parties exchanged letters. Since then Veni Markovski has participated in the 2007 Russian Internet Forum for the first time (http://2007.rif.ru), ICANN staff and board members have met with officials from across the Russian Internet community, and the Coordination Center has joined the Country Code Names Supporting Organisation which is a policy development body created for and by ccTLD managers for handling global country-code top level domain (ccTLD) issues within the ICANN structure.
About ICANN: ICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers like domain names (like .org, .museum and country codes like .uk) and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers reach each other over the Internet. Careful management of these resources is vital to the Internet's operation, so ICANN's global stakeholders meet regularly to develop policies that ensure the Internet's ongoing security and stability. ICANN is an internationally organized, public benefit non-profit company. For more information please visit: www.icann.org.
