China’s ccTLDs dip slightly

Both country-code domains of the People's Republic of China ended last year with a slight decline. According to Domain Incite, citing a recently published report by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), the total number of registrations in the .CN national domain reached 20,768,082 by the end of 2025. This represents a drop of about 52,000 domain names (–0.25%) compared to the previous year. Compared with mid-2025, the decline was even more prominent, amounting to approximately 88,000 registrations.

The internationalized domain name (IDN) for China, .中国 (.xn--fiqs8s), also showed a downward trend. As of the end of 2025, it had 159,480 registered domain names. Over the course of the year, the number declined by about 5,700 names (–3.5%), down from 165,265 registrations in 2024. The domain reached its peak in 2021 with slightly over 210,000 registrations. However, it must be admitted that any of these numbers is relatively modest for the internationalized national domain of a country with a population of approximately 1.4 billion people.

The report also indicates that Chinese users have registered a total of about 32.3 million domain names across all domain zones worldwide, which is approximately 715,000 registrations (–2.1%) fewer than during the previous year.
