PIR reports its 2024 performance results

Public Interest Registry (PIR), which manages the .ORG generic top-level domain, has released its 2024 performance report. The report shows that the number of domain names managed by the registry reached 11,149,764 by the end of the reporting year. Moreover, 2.2 million new names were registered in the .ORG domain zone during the year. Domain Name Wire, reporting this news, notes that this is the highest new registration rate for the domain in seven years. The renewal rate for the domain zone is also impressive: the weighted average for the past three years is 80.1 percent.

PIR is a non-profit organization, but its economic performance for 2024 cannot be considered anything but successful. Total revenue amounted to $106.4 million, an increase of $1.4 million compared to the previous year. At the same time, the registry managed to reduce expenses. At the end of 2023, it renewed its contract with Identity Digital, the technical operator of the .ORG domain, on more favorable terms. While Identity Digital's services cost PIR $15.1 million in 2023, they decreased to $10.5 million in 2024. Overall, the registry has reduced expenses on this budget line item by almost 75 percent since 2016.
