MYNIC, the registry managing Malaysia’s ccTLD, has reported that as of late July, the number of registered domain names has reached 675,607 as opposed to 510,546 only a month earlier, showing a 32% growth with 165,061 new registrations in July. Compared to the start of the year, the number of registered domains in .MY has almost doubled from 342,326.
The boost is solely due to the registration of second-level domains, with the total current number being 523,218. Third-level domains are also available in .MY, such as com.my, .net.my or biz.my. However, their number has not changed and has even gone down slightly for some categories.
Malaysia’s country-level domain has surged mainly following the cancellation of residence restrictions. Previously, only residents of Malaysia and local legal entities were allowed to register domain names in .MY. In the summer of 2024, MYNIC dropped this policy, only limiting domestic registrations to third-level spaces while second-level domains became available worldwide. This measure was expected to drastically boost the domain’s growth. As of late August 2024, .MY had 313,588 domain names and registry representatives hoped to hit 400,000 registrations by year-end.
The effort was not immediately successful – most likely because the policy changes were not supported by a sufficiently big marketing campaign. Even if later, the milestone was still achieved in April 2025, and Malaysia’s ссTLD continues to grow at an impressive rate. Yet, Domain Incite points out another important factor of this growth spurt: many large registrars are selling annual registration in .MY for around $2 instead of the usual retail price of $50. The renewal fee remains the same though so there is a high possibility that when the first year ends, this explosive growth will be followed by a rather substantial decline.
