China’s ccTLD .CN shows signs of stabilization

Domain Incite has reported preliminary data on the Chinese domain market for the first half of the year. While the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has yet to release official statistics, it has issued a press release confirming that registrations under China’s country code top-level domain .CN reached 20.85 million by the end of June 2025.

For context, the figure stood at 20.82 million at the close of 2024. Given the size of China’s domain market, the increase of 30,000 registrations is relatively modest. More significantly, however, China’s ccTLD is showing signs of stabilization. The first half of 2024 saw a sharp contraction, with 563,000 registrations lost, followed by a strong rebound in the second half, adding 1.2 million names. It remains unclear whether the latest results indicate a trend toward stability or merely a pause before further volatility.

CNNIC’s press release also estimated that China’s total domain registrations reached 32.62 million in the first half of 2025, though no detailed breakdown by domain zones was provided. Industry experts have previously attributed the recovery of China’s domain market as a contributing factor to the rise in .COM registrations in Q2 2025.
