Last week, the domain marketplace Sedo reported an impressive sale: Crypto.bot changed hands for $250,000 topping the weekly ranking and making it the highest-priced .BOT domain ever sold.
Originally delegated to Amazon in 2014 during ICANN’s New Generic Top-Level Domain Program, the .BOT extension didn’t open for public registration until nine years later, October 2023.
Despite the new TLD’s obviously limited appeal – fewer than 20,000 registrations, according to nTLDstats – the Crypto.bot sale, unsurprisingly, set a new record. Until very recently, the largest .BOT sale of just 24 recorded in NameBio’s database was Web3.bot for $12,000 in 2024. The new deal surpassed that by more than 20 times.
Domain Investing noted an interesting twist: CryptoBot.com has been listed for sale for a while at just $100,000 – far less than Crypto.bot. Despite this, the buyer opted for the newer, less popular extension at $250,000. The buyer’s identity and plans for the domain remain unknown, leaving room for speculation.
