On Sunday June 8, before ICANN83 got underway in Prague, the ICANN Board of Directors met to formally adopt the Review Mechanism Policy developed by the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO).
This new policy will offer registries a quick, inexpensive, and fair mechanism to review specific IANA decisions on the delegation, transfer, revocation, and retirement of country code top-level domains (ccTLDs).
The main purpose of this mechanism is to provide ccTLD registries with the opportunity to seek an independent external review of specific decisions made by IANA functions operators and, if necessary, to challenge the decision or seek clarification. At the same time, it is emphasized that the result of the review will not be binding.
The review mechanism will be available to managers of existing ccTLDs as well as applicants for new ccTLDs, as IANA decisions regarding the ccTLD they are applying for will influence them directly. The implementation timeline and additional technical details of the review mechanism will be published in the coming months.
