According to Newfold Digital, domain registrar Web.com, affiliated with it, will stop operating shortly. Newfold Digital representatives assured everyone that it would not be necessary for another registrar to manage domain names, and that clients should not take any additional action.
“We’re committed to making the transition to Network Solutions seamless and convenient. That means no downtime or interruptions to your existing services. Simply put, you won’t have to do anything,” Web.com said. "Pricing, features, and user credentials will not change either", it said.
In late 2024, Web.com managed about 818,000 gTLD domains, down from its peak of over two million during the Covid-19 pandemic. By the way, Web.com posted stable growth throughout 2023; consequently, the termination of its operations is not motivated by economic or operational issues. On the contrary, Newfold Digital that unites several major domain registrars wants to consolidate its assets and to upgrade the management system.
Curiously, Web.com took over Network Solutions, another major registrar, in 2011 by purchasing its assets for $516 million. Newfold Digital that was established following several other mergers is now liquidating Web.com. According to Domain Incite, there is one highly interesting aspect here. The Web.com brand will cease to exist soon, and the relevant gTLD name with an impressive face value will become redundant. Quite possibly, we will witness another record-breaking domain deal in the future.
