Atom.com CEO Darpan Munjal has shared some curious statistics on X (formerly Twitter). The graphics he posted, detailing the sales distribution of non .com TLDs on his platform from the last three years, show that .com TLD’s popularity is trending down.
True, .com still accounts for the lion’s share of all transactions in the domain market, and its hegemony is hardly to be challenged in the near future. The decline is slight, but the trend has been stable for three years anyway. In 2022, .com names accounted for 91% of overall sales on Atom.com. In 2023, this share dropped to 88.54%, and in 2024, to 86.2%.
Domain Investing, reporting this news, suggested that domain investors take a closer look at other generic top-level domains. The rapid development of technology in recent years has led to a booming growth of new startups. Without generous funding, which few of them have access to, they turn to non .com domain names as a less expensive and therefore increasingly attractive option.
In his tweet, Darpan Munjal also shared information showing which non .com domain name extensions are the best sellers on Atom.com. The most popular ones include .ai, the ccTLD for Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, and .io, the ccTLD for the British Indian Ocean Territory, each accounting for over 20% of overall non .com domain name sales. The two leaders are followed by .org with 11%, .uk and .co (Colombia) with 7% each.
