The sixth Internet Governance Forum Belarus IGF-2024 has concluded. Held on December 3 in Minsk, the forum adopted a hybrid format. Key topics of discussion included the latest IT trends, cybersecurity, the internet's impact on various demographic groups, and the shifting media landscape.
This forum remains the sole platform in Belarus that convenes representatives from all sectors interested in internet development: government entities, businesses, non-profit organizations, the technical and academic communities, and everyday internet users. This year's primary internet industry event attracted approximately 400 participants.
"The IGF format is unmatched. It serves as a litmus test for ongoing processes within the internet ecosystem. Moreover, it accurately identifies trending topics for the foreseeable future,” stated Mikhail Anisimov, Senior Manager for Stakeholder Engagement at ICANN for Eastern Europe & Central Asia.
"Since its inception, Belarus IGF has maintained high standards, even when compared to larger regional internet governance forums,” noted Sergey Povalishev, CEO of hoster.by. "We prioritize practical discussions, laying the groundwork for tangible changes in the internet sector. This year, participants explored AI technology legislation and personal data processing. They debated standards and norms for new media and discussed digital solutions to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities. They also addressed the risks associated with minors interacting with social networks. Special focus was given to EdTech and training the next generation of IT and journalism professionals."
Andrey Vorobyev, Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, participated in IGF-2024. “This sixth regional IGF in Minsk exemplifies the necessity of uniting all parties involved in internet development. The forum once again tackled pressing public issues, with government representatives, industry experts, and internet users collaboratively seeking solutions," remarked Andrey Vorobyev.
The central theme of Belarus IGF-2024 was digital transformation, with experts discussing how emerging technologies are reshaping traditional approaches in media, business, education, and public services.
"This year, the Organizing Committee has exerted significant effort in gathering questions and topic suggestions to form the forum's agenda," commented Oleg Sedelnik, CEO of BeCloud. "Topics such as the advancement of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, digital transformation, creating an inclusive digital space in Belarus, child safety on the internet, internet advertising regulation, the evolving role of media due to internet accessibility, and challenges in cybersecurity and personal data protection are of considerable interest to Belarusian users."
Belarus IGF is an integral part of the global Internet Governance Forum, which operates under the UN's auspices worldwide. Its primary objective is to ensure that the internet industry evolves through open dialogue among all stakeholders, without exception.
