China’s ccTLD Lost More Than Half a Million Registrations in the First Half of 2024

The national domain of China .CN continues to show a decline. This is reported by the Domain Incite, citing statistics published by CNNIC, which manages the domain zone. According to the CNNIC report, as of the end of June, 19,562,007 domain names were registered in the national domain of China .CN. And at the end of December, the number of registrations in it was 20,125,764. Thus, in the first half of this year, the Chinese national domain lost more than half a million registrations - 563,757, to be exact.

This, however, does not prevent .CN from remaining the largest among national domains, quite significantly ahead of its closest pursuer, the ccTLD of Germany .DE. According to its registry DENIC, as of June 30, 2024, there were 17,703,602 registered names. But the trend is obvious: the .CN domain is losing popularity. It may be recalled that Verisign has repeatedly cited the decline in the Chinese domain market as the reason for the decline in registrations in the generic top-level domain .COM. Obviously, this decline affected not only .COM, but also the national domain zone of China itself. And the reasons should probably be sought in the economic situation in the PRC.
