The final plenary session of ICANN80 was dedicated to discussing FY26 – 30 ICANN Strategic Plan. The ICANN Board Strategic Planning Committee (BSPC) shared with Conference participants draft strategies designed to shape ICANN's operations for fiscal years 2026-2030.
This session was an excellent opportunity for the community to actively participate in the draft strategies and provide feedback before the draft Strategic Plan is available for public comment in July.
The session was moderated by ICANN Board Member and BSPC Co-Chair Maarten Botteman, who presented ICANN's draft vision of strategic goals for 2026-2030. Goals included supporting and promoting ICANN's multistakeholder model, an inclusive Internet Governance model, enhancing organizational excellence, collaborating with relevant stakeholders to advance the Internet's unique identifier systems, and strengthening the security of unique identifier systems.
According to Irina Danelia, Deputy Director of the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, it is necessary to add more specifics to the final document. She said that the draft Strategy was discussed the day before at a meeting of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO), and managers and heads of national registries also made suggestions for the draft.
“First, ccTLD managers strongly suggest that ICANN includes in its strategic plan a kind of risk assessment and SWOT analysis which was used as a basis for suggested strategic objectives. And secondly, it was noted that proposed draft plan presents objectives as more than a process, rather than a target where ICANN is going to come. So we suggest to add more concrete description of what the target state for ICANN would be by 2030, and what would be the measurable KPIs for that,” Irina said during the Plenary Session.
During the Session, participants asked questions, shared their thoughts and made suggestions for refining and strengthening the draft strategies.
The final version of FY26 – 30 ICANN Strategic Plan scheduled to be approved in March 2025 at ICANN82 in Seattle (USA).
