The non-profit organization Nominet, which is the registry of the UK country code domain .UK, presented a report on the fight against DNS Abuse in the past year. At the request of law enforcement agencies, 1,193 domains were blocked over 12 months. In the previous 12 months, this figure stood at 2,106 domains, making the number of domains blocked by police for the second year in a row the lowest ever recorded by Nominet. The largest number of domains – 717 – were blocked due to copyright infringement.
At the same time, the number of domain names blocked by the registry itself thanks to the Domain Watch preventive detection technology for potentially malicious registrations not only did not decrease, but also increased over the year by almost 20% - from 5,005 to 5,911. However, Nominet representatives explain this growth due to improved technology, which now allows it to identify malicious domain names that previously escaped its attention. Previously, the registry reported that the number of domain disputes in 2023 also decreased: 511 complaints were received compared to 568 a year earlier.
The reduction in cybersquatting and domain name abuse in the UK country code is, of course, welcome. However, the Domain Incite, reporting this news, draws attention to the fact that the number of registrations in the domain zone has also decreased: at the end of January of this year it was 10.68 million, while a year earlier it was 11.04 million.
