Colombian Airline Abandons its Branding Domain

Large companies continue to acknowledge their inability to manage branded domains. Another such company was Aerovias del Continente Americano S.A. Avianca is the largest Colombian airline with a history going back 100 years. The company sent an application to ICANN with a request to terminate the contract for the right to manage the .AVIANCA domain back in December, and now the documents have been published on the official ICANN website for review and discussion.

According to the Domain Incite, Avianca’s consultant at the stage of preparation and submission of the application was Afilias (which later became part of Identity Digital). It later took on the functions of the technical operator of the domain zone. However, it definitely had little work in this capacity - not to say that there was none at all. Over the past almost 8 years since the delegation (in March 2016), not a single domain name has been registered in the .AVIANCA - with the exception of the mandatory nic.avianca. Thus, the Colombian airline has become another one on the list of those that have not found use for their domain-brand: the number of refusals has already definitely reached 120 - and, perhaps, even exceeded, the statistics of such refusals are updated with a significant delay.
