Google has announced the launch of eight new gTLDs, namely, .FOO, .ZIP, .MOV, .NEXUS, .DAD, .PHD, .PROF and .ESQ. Although all of them were delegated in 2014, it took the company almost nine years to activate them. This process is now underway, and copyright holders will be able to register names coinciding with their trademarks and brand names during sunrise, the priority registration period, due to begin this Sunday, April 2.
This period will last for a month. The Early Access Periods will run for a week after that up until May 10 for premium prices that will be reduced every day. After that, the gTLDs will all go into general availability. The new gTLDs are open domains, and anyone will therefore be able to register various names there.
While reporting this news, Domain Incite noted that cybersecurity specialists are having some misgivings about launching the .ZIP and .MOV domains. Their names coincide with popular file format extensions, specifically, zip archives and video files. Consequently, inventive cybercriminals may conceive new cheating schemes by using domain names in these gTLDs.
