India's ccTLD Registry to Stop GoDaddy Services

NIXI, the non-profit organization which is the registry of the national domain of India .IN and its internationalized versions, has announced a tender for the provision of technical operator services for this domain zone. Currently, these functions are performed by GoDaddy, but its chances of renewing the contract look illusory, according to Domain Incite. The terms of the tender explicitly state that the new technical operator should be an Indian company, preferably with subsidiaries in other developing countries.

Nowadays, there are more than three million registrations in the .IN. And it's possible that this transit will be the biggest in the domain industry's history by the time the technical operator is replaced. So far, Australia's .AU transition has been the largest in 2018, when 3.1 million domain names were transferred from Neustar to Afilias. Previously, 2.7 million .ORG domain names were transferred from Verisign to PIR in 2003.

It is also worth paying attention to the very ambitious plans of NIXI. The terms of the tender stipulate that the winning company must design and create a domain zone management system and carry out its technical management throughout the year. After that, this system - and, possibly, the employees working in it - will be transferred to the registry itself. Moreover, NIXI does not hide the fact that in the future the registry would like to act as a technical operator for country code domains of other developing countries.
