SES S.A. Terminates Its Brand Domain

SES S.A., a large international satellite communications and broadcasting company, has notified ICANN that it no longer intends to use the .SES domain brand delegated to it. More precisely, the notice was sent back in June, but the information about the termination of the contract appeared on the ICANN website only at the end of last week.

The domain was delegated in 2012, however, in addition to the obligatory name nic.ses, only one more name was registered in it - astra.ses, and even that served exclusively for redirecting to the company's official website on the ses.com domain, according to the Domain Name Wire. In accordance with ICANN rules, the .SES domain will be removed from the root zone without the possibility of re-registration. In this regard, it is somewhat strange that the company did not try to find a buyer for its domain: the SES abbreviation is certainly not unique and is present in the name of many companies and organizations.

Stranger still, some businesses have already stated that they anticipate applying for branded domains in the new gTLDs program's upcoming phase. The data on the use of these domains so far are very depressing: in the start of this year, there were over 100 instances of refusal to use them.
