The Number Of Complaints Filed Under The Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) Continues To Grow Steadily

Law firm GigaLaw, engaged in ensuring the protection of intellectual property rights in the global network and, in particular, in the domain space, has published an analytical review Domain Dispute Digest for the Q3 of this year. The report states that the number of complaints filed by copyright holders under the UDRP continues to grow steadily. There is every reason to believe that this year will be the ninth in a row that the number of UDRP complaints filed will exceed last year's figures. Moreover, with a high degree of probability, 2022 could set a record for the number of complaints filed: it is expected to be more than 5,500.

During the Q3, 2030 decisions made by arbitration courts considering domain disputes under the UDRP were published. This is 24.2% more than in the same period last year. The number of domain names appearing in these decisions was 3,969, an increase of 18.3% compared to Q3 2021. At the same time, in 95.2% of all cases, the arbitrators took the side of the right holders and satisfied the complaints.

Of course, the .COM domain remains the common top-level domain in which names are most often the object of complaints: 3215 domain names of this domain zone are mentioned in UDRP decisions. For comparison, the .NET domain, which comes in second place, is represented by 101 names in the solutions. Colombia's .CO is the leader among ccTLDs with 71 names.

Talking about copyright holders who protect their rights more actively than others, then Meta Platforms Inc holding is in the lead (the social networks Facebook and Instagram, which are part of it, are recognized as extremist organizations in the Russian Federation): in three months, the company's complaints were considered 27 times. But in terms of the number of domains mentioned in UDRP complaints, Google is in the lead: in the third quarter, it laid claim to 174 domain names at once.
