The ICANN Board approved the ccNSO Retirement of ccTLDs Policy. The official decision was made the board of directors meeting in Kuala Lumpur on the last day of ICANN 75, September 22, according to Domain Incite.
The policy provides that ICANN and a ccTLD registry agree on a Retirement plan. This occurs if the two-letter state or territory code is removed from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) registries, which can happen, for example, if the state to which the domain was delegated ceases to exist due to the collapse or renaming. It is assumed that the domain is subject to removal from the root zone five years after the country code is removed from the ISO registries. However, this period may be extended at the request of the Registry and with the consent of ICANN.
