The Number Of Registered Domain Names In The World Reached 351.5 Million In The First Half Of The Year

Verisign has published the latest issue of its quarterly Domain Name Industry Brief (DNIB), which is one of the most authoritative sources of information on the state of the domain market. The report summarizes the results of the Q2 and the first half of the current year. According to its data, as of June 30, 351.5 million domain names were registered in the world. This is 1 million or 0.3% more than in the first quarter. The growth compared to the second quarter of last year amounted to 10.4 million, which corresponds to 3%.

At the same time, for the .COM and .NET domain zones managed by Verisign itself, the quarter was not very successful. The total number of registrations in these two domains decreased by 0.4 million (0.2%) compared to the Q1. However, compared to the same period last year, the total number of registrations in these two domain zones still increased significantly - by 3.7 million or 2.2%. By the end of the first half of 2022, the number of names registered in the .COM domain is estimated at 161.1 million, in the .NET domain - at 13.2 million.

In national domain zones, as of June 30, 134.1 million names were registered - 0.7 million or 0.5% more than in the Q1. China's .CN remains the largest national domain, with an estimated 20.6 million registrations. The number of names in the national domain of the Russian Federation .RU, which DNIB estimates at 5.7 million. This makes the Russian domain the fifth in terms of the number of registrations among ccTLDs and the eighth among all gTLDs.

The number of names in the new gTLDs reached 27 million by the end of the first half of the year - an increase compared to the Q1 was 2.6%, compared to the same period last year - just 18.1%. The leader in this category is the .XYZ with 4.2 million registrations, which also allows it to take the 10th line in the list of the largest domain zones.
