German ccTLD .DE is at the height of international popularity

DENIC, which manages the German ccTLD .DE, has showed its report for 2021. The year turned out to be significant for one of the largest national domains in the world. Two anniversaries fell on it at once: the domain itself turned 35 and the DENIC registry turned 25. And anniversaries can be quite satisfied with their results.

In July 2021, the .DE domain reached 17 million registered names. And by the end of the year, this figure grew to 17,160,504 registrations - against 16,700,855 a year earlier. Thus, the annual increase amounted to about 460 thousand names. Interestingly, German registrants accounted for slightly less than half of the new registrations - about 220,000. By the time, foreign registrants replenished the domain zone with about 240 thousand names.

This is evidence that the .DE domain is now at the peak of international popularity. The largest number of foreign registrants is in the United States, with 360,367 names or 21.3% of all foreign registrations. The second place is taken by the Netherlands - 217,970 domains (12.9%), the third by Russia - it is curious that our country has bypassed in this sense the German-speaking neighbor of Germany, Austria. Russian registrants own 160,182 domains (9.4%).

However, the share of all foreign registrations is only 9.9% of the total number of registered names in the .DE domain. As befits a national domain, it is in demand primarily among the inhabitants of the country themselves. This is confirmed by the fact that 60% of all domain names registered in Germany fall on the .DE domain.
