The owner of the domain name thepiratebay.com has announced it’s on sale. This domain, among others, belonged to the most famous pirate resource of the global network, the torrent tracker The Pirate Bay. However, after the website’s golden age passed, its creators apparently did not pay much attention to their domain assets. In September 2020, the registration of piratebay.org and thepiratebay.com expired and nobody cared to renew it. The domains were put up for auction and sold for $50,000 and $31,500, respectively.
However, none of these domains has ever been the main domain for the torrent tracker, which was thepiratebay.org. So these two domain names are only of any value as a reminder of the Pirate Bay era. Also, as Completemusicupdate reports citing the current registrant of thepiratebay.com, many users often type this, incorrectly, URL in the address bar of their browsers by mistake. As a result, the domain gets a lot of traffic, which can be monetized by adding advertising. This is what the registrant was doing as of late, but with plans to create a legal file-sharing site. Now they have abandoned their plans, considering it wrong to use the valuable domain in such a primitive way. The registrant is going to sell the domain name for $38,000 or rent it out for $7,000 per month.
