Domain community members want to return to in-person meetings

ICANN published the results of its online survey, the main topic of which was the possibility of holding ICANN 72 in a hybrid format – both online and in-person. The respondents were also asked about their attitude to safety measures and possible restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic.

The survey involved 665 people, including 151 ICANN employees. The responses clearly indicate that domain community members miss face-to-face meetings and will accept any restrictions in order to be able to attend ICANN events in person. Only 11 percent of respondents objected to individual safety measures, which are expected to include proof of vaccination, pre-departure and on-site testing, face masks and social distancing at all events. At the same time, each of these measures was supported by at least 72% of the respondents.

The greatest support came from representatives of North American and European countries, which is not surprising given that these countries have had the most rapid vaccination rollout. However, the enthusiasm from North Americans can also be explained by the fact that ICANN 72 is planned to be held in Seattle. However, despite the obvious community support, ICANN has the final say on this matter. The corporation's board is expected to decide on the format of the upcoming meeting no later than July, according to Domain Incite.
