PIR opens nomination process for .ORG Impact Awards

The Public Interest Registry (PIR), which runs the .ORG generic top-level domain, has announced the opening of the nomination process for its annual .ORG Impact Awards, according to Domain Name Wire. This year, the awards will be presented for the third time. PIR recognizes organizations and individuals who strive to “make the world a better place” and use domain names in .ORG.

This year, the registry decided to reduce the number of categories, while increasing the awards. The list of categories includes: Health and Healing in a Period of Pandemic; Overcoming Climate Change; Championing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Fighting Hunger and Poverty; Providing Quality Education for All; Building Better Communities; and .ORG Rising Stars. (The age of participants in the last category cannot exceed 25 years.) Last year’s winners received $5,000 each, but now the awards have gone up to $10,000. The winner in the main category – .ORG of the Year – will receive $35,000.

Although .ORG is considered the home of charities, the nominees do not necessarily need to have that status. The only requirement is that winners must use a .org domain name, and the person making the nomination must be 18 years or older. Last year, PIR received over 500 entries, and this year, that number may be even higher. Submissinos will be accepted until July 30, and on September 14, the registry will announce five finalists in each category.
