Ohio County forgets to renew tourism site’s domain name and faces the consequences

The Lorain County Commissioners in Ohio are sorely vexed by a scandal involving the visitloraincounty.com website. The Lorain County Visitors Bureau acted as this domain name’s registrant. However, the Lorain County Commissioners are now swamped with complaints saying that the website redirects people to a certain Indonesian website for poker players. Local officials even wanted to file a lawsuit. However, it turned out that the takeover was perfectly legal.

The Lorain County Visitors Bureau merely forgot to renew its domain. After being allowed to expire, the domain received another completely legal owner. The situation is particularly disappointing because the local Visitors Bureau is quite successful. According to the local media, the Bureau now has over $1 million on its bank account; and the annual renewal for the website domain name was only $18. Moreover, the county wanted to spend part of this sum on updating the website. It appears that the local authorities will now have to find a new domain for the website because Indonesian gambling tycoons are unlikely to react generously, and reinstate the visitloraincounty.com domain name free of charge or for a minimal sum. It might sound hilarious, but Poker News Daily, an online resource dealing with the game, has also reported this news.
