An online survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Internet Society (ISOC) highlights that the coronavirus pandemic has made the internet crucial for the functioning of the world's economies. The World Wide Web has allowed almost half (48 percent) of those surveyed to continue their work and studies.
The results of the ISOC survey showed that during the pandemic two out of five (39percent) people turned to the internet for services that they had not used before. That number rose to 66 percent among those surveyed living in countries with lower network penetration, such as Lebanon, Mexico, Colombia, South Africa and India, where the use of online services was initially low.
Three out of five users reported using the internet for banking (60 percent) and shopping (60 percent), while two out of five reported making phone calls (41 percent), watching videos (39 percent), and accessing the news, as well as news sources from other countries (38 percent). Based on the survey results, the ISOC again calls on government agencies to use the Internet Impact Assessment Toolkit (IIAT) to adopt competent and targeted solutions.
