The Canadian ccTLD registry CIRA announced having reached a major milestone: the number of registered names in .CA has exceeded 3 million. By a curious coincidence, the three millionth domain name was registered on November 30. On this day 20 years ago, CIRA officially took over the registry from John Demco, former Computing Facilities Manager for the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, who personally administered the .CA domain zone.
According to Domain Incite, .CA hit the milestone of 3 million thanks to a noticeable increase in new registrations this year, which exceeded 160,000, or 34% more than in the same period last year. The registry says this accelerated growth is largely due to more small businesses going online due to the pandemic. Reaching the 3 million mark means that .CA now ranks as the 12th largest ccTLD by registrations.
