Vaccine, domain and conspiracy theory

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to make headlines, including in the domain industry. Another piece of coronavirus news – and very interesting one – has been reported by Domain Gang. As is known, the Russian Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology has created a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine, called Sputnik V, was registered by the Russian Ministry of Healthcare and is now in phase III clinical trials.

The official website for the vaccine operates on SputnikVaccine.com. The reason for choosing such a long name is, most likely, that SputnikV.com was already taken. Domain Gang found out that this domain name was registered on July 30, 2019. Moreover, it was registered in China – almost six months before the first news about the new Chinese coronavirus and a year before the first reports of the Russian vaccine. Given the popularity of various conspiracy theories in connection with the pandemic, one day this coincidence may fuel new conjectures that the Chinese and Russians not only agreed in advance to unleash a terrible virus on the world, but also invented a vaccine and even its name, keeping all this secret until the right moment. As it is often said in such cases, let’s stock up on popcorn.
