Portuguese national domain continues “thanking” the pandemic

The organization Associação DNS.PT, which administers the registry of the Portuguese national domain .PT shared some positive and fairly interesting news. It is common knowledge that the quarantine restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, have encouraged small and medium businesses to more actively transfer their activities to the internet. This led to substantial growth in the number of new registrations of domain names, primarily in many national domains.

The Portuguese national domain .PT was no exception. Indicatively, this trend continued even after the strictest quarantine restrictions were lifted. According to Associação DNS.PT, 6,843 new names were registered in this domain last August, a 35 percent increase over August 2019. July’s growth was up 17.28 percent over July 2019. Moreover, this year’s higher growth rates were recorded in the first half of September as well. According to Associação DNS.PT, catering companies, fitness studios, companies that provide housekeeping services and social solidarity projects are the most active in registering their domain names.

Reporting this news, Domain Incite noted the irony of the registry announcing the results of its performance during a live event rather than online, but it did serve as a good indicator of the relaxed quarantine measures in Portugal. Based on photos of the event, social distancing etiquette was strictly observed.
