United States seizes domain names used by terrorist organization

The US Department of Justice announced the takedown and seizure of Aletejahtv.com and Aletejahtv.org. Both sites hosted propaganda articles, photos and videos by the Shiite militant organization Kata’ib Hizballah. This organization, which operates in Iraq and Syria, carried out numerous attacks against the international coalition forces led by the United States during the Iraq war. In the United States, the group is listed as a Specially Designated National and a Foreign Terrorist Organization, which categorically prohibits US citizens and companies from dealing with it.

However, according to the Justice Department statement, the registrant of the domains Aletejahtv.com and Aletejahtv.org is an unnamed Arizona technology company. It is also unclear from the statement how the militant organization from Iraq could have acquired the domains of an Arizona-based company. In any case, such use is illegal. “Once again we see designated foreign terrorist organizations turning to the internet to push their message and recruit followers for their violent causes,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers. “We will continue to fight terror recruitment and propaganda efforts in the digital world, as we do elsewhere.”
