A sad pun

Domain Name Wire reported a sad story that happened to iCommand Ltd, an Australian tech company developing voice recognition and voice control systems. Some time ago, the company started working on a new product named Downpat. It purchased the downpat.com domain for $3,000 specially to roll out the new product. But later the plan went awry.

iCommand Ltd simply forgot to renew the domain’s registration, and when the product was ready, it turned out that the domain did not belong to the company anymore. It was auctioned at GoDaddy as an expired domain and bought by ArtWired, a domain name investor, for a mere $861. iCommand Ltd attempted to buy it back, but did not succeed. Then the company filed a complaint under UDRP, however, the complaint, as expected, was dismissed: it was impossible to find anything unlawful in the actions of ArtWired despite all the desire to do so.

This case looks like a sad pun. The phrase “down pat” (downpat.com) means “to memorize”. Regretfully, iCommand Ltd obviously failed to memorize the deadline and the rules for renewing its domain’s registration.
